Hello from Dutch Harbor and NOAA Ship MILLER FREEMAN

Greetings from Dutch Harbor. I arrived here on Thursday and NOAA ship MILLER FREEMAN came in on Friday. I am on-board and well, greeting old friends and making a few new ones. Excalibur arrived, has been re-assembled and all tests came out fine. You can see our first test data from Alaska by clicking here: www.jacobtanenbaum.com/drifter/data.htm

As you can see from the test data, the buoy has not yet been deployed in the water. I will let you know when and where we plan to put it in the water.

Congratulations to those who answered yesterday’s question. The distance between Dutch Harbor and Anchorage is about 800 miles, so 266 miles per hour is the correct speed. If you got anywhere between 255 and 275, I think you are doing very well. As far as the long flight the other day, yes, I missed a little sleep, but I am just glad that the man on the plane will be OK. That is so much more important than a little sleep.

Alaska is cold, mainly because the wind has been blowing very hard. The mountains are still full of snow. It is everywhere you look. Still, I love being out-doors no matter what the temperature. I have spent the last few days hiking in the mountains and enjoying Alaska. Here are a few photos to get us started. So many of you asked for photos of wildlife, I’ll give you a whole bunch. There are more on the gallery section of the website as well.

It is interesting to hike on the tundra here. It is very soft and full of life, this time of year. There are almost no trees on this entire island, but I did find one lonely pine on a mountain overlooking Captain’s Bay. There are no others that I can see for miles!

Many people asked for photos of the crab fleet featured in the show Deadliest Catch. Here are a few photos of crab boats. Most of the fleet is docked here right now waiting for the season to open in October.
A few of you asked for photos of the school here is Dutch Harbor. Here is a photo of that as well. They have two schools. One is Kindergarten –4th grade, the other 5th through 12th grade. You can read about the district here: http://www.ucsd.net/ How is it similar to where you go to school? How is it different?

Deear Mr.T,
You should wear the safty gear because you could fall over you will be safe in the ruff waters, and you could drown if you didn't have thee satfy gear. Is that a law to wear safty gear on a boat, or is it just a good idea? This reminds me of when I was on a cruise on the frist day we had to go to our rooms at a certin time an then meet at a certin place we had to meet if the boat would sink so we would known were to go. Did you have to do that? Um...Sorry that I'm writting this but I think you will get seasick. Well I wrote alot so I'm going to stop writing.Bye!

Dear Mr.T,

I would wearthe safety suit because, if my parents figured out that I didn't they would kill me. Also I was taught that safety come first and I wouldn"t take a chance.

hi mr.t i like the vido and i wouldent were it i would just be careful.

Dear Mr. T,
Is it clean over there?

~ Sangeetha

Dear Mr. T,
I figured out that the ship travels 300 knots per day. I also converted it to miles which is 345.

WS

Dear Mr.T,
you will travel 300 knots in a day. Then I converted it into miles and got 345 miles per day.

Hi Mr.T if you can write back can you tell me what the deepest part of the ocean you sailed over?

Dylan T.

Hello Mr.T can you tell me if caught anything different in the net to catch plankton?
