Greetings from Alaska

Greetings from Anchorage, Alaska. Snuggy, Excalibur and I made it into Anchorage last night after a long and difficult day. Did you figure out how long it would take to get here? Well let me tell you how it really went. We were supposed to get here at 8:06 PM Alaska time (great job all who said 8:15). But we didn’t. A gentleman on the plane had a medical problem mid-way through the flight. It was serious enough that he needed immediate attention. Fortunately, there was a large group of doctors on-route to Anchorage and he had lots of people around him who knew exactly what to do. The pilots turned the plane around and landed in the nearest airport: The town of Edmonton, in the province of Alberta in the country of Canada. The gentleman was immediately taken off the plane by an ambulance crew that was waiting for us on the runway and everyone on board the plane applauded as the kind doctors who helped him returned to their seats. We found out later that he was in the hospital with his family and would be fine with the proper care, but now the airline crew had a big job: We had landed our plane in the wrong country! There were a LOT of forms to fill out, and it took a LONG time. After all the forms were filled out and the plane was made ready for takeoff, the pilot announced that we had landed our plane with so much extra fuel that we had to get our landing gear inspected by a mechanic. Fuel is heavy and our plane was over-weight when it landed. The mechanic, however, was home in bed.

The mechanic finally arrived and we got back on-route. We arrived in Anchorage 4 hours late. It was midnight Alaska time, or 4 in the morning New York time. You guessed it, I was tired.

Here are some photos of Anchorage. It is the largest city in Alaska. It has many things you would find in any large city, but it is still Alaska. The airport, for example, is large and modern, but it includes things that you don’t often see in airports. Here are some photos taken at the sea-plane area of the airport. That’s right, some of the runways here are made of water. I wonder what they do in the winter? Why do you think they need so many sea-planes here in Alaska?
4th and 5th graders, here is another question for you: This morning I am getting ready to go to the town of Dutch Harbor on the Aleutian Islands. Can you measure the route to Dutch Harbor from Anchorage using Google Earth? The plane will take 3 hours (I hope) to get there. How fast will it go?
Thanks for all your good wishes and comments. Ben, the cat's name is Rusty and I'll send lots of photos. I'll especially concentrate on wildlife and I take photos later today in Dutch Harbor.

Dear Mr.T,
That must stink to be late to NOAA. At least the man was safe. Anyways, I was answering the question about how fast the plane was going, I got 267.3372. I got it first but the teacher said you should be closer. The prize was candy so I didn't really care.
